Dances With Wolves

I present to you my final piece of artwork that I will ever create at Sheridan. It's really strange to think that in a month I will be on my own in the world looking for illustration work. This assignment was all about movie posters. We had to pick a movie from a giant list and then conceptually portray the one we chose. I for some reason decided to go with Dances With Wolves mostly because when I saw it I just kept hearing my mom say "Tatunka" over and over in my head from when I was a child lol.

I decided to do some progress shots for this piece because I've never done that before. Eventually I would like to invest in a camera that can record so I can do videos and post them on youtube.

It's a {Travis}ty!

-BEGINNING OF RANT-

So the new issue of travis magazine came out. The cover looks really awesome but alas, done by an animation student. Yet the issue is called the 'illustration' edition. I don't know if I agree with opening up the magazine to animation students... a lot of the professors were rather displeased with it. A lot of students work got blown up too big and became pixalated while others, myself included, had their work cut up in the gutter of the page.

Like it's an honor to be published in the magazine in the first place and I'm very grateful but it sucks that my image was destroyed by the gutter. Why would the person who was in charge of the layout of these pages do that? The entire concept of my image is in the woman's face... there isn't really much of a point to it if it's just going to be cut out... I dunno.

- END OF RANT - lol

Two Updates In One Week?! *gasp*

This week has been rather interesting. I managed to get a lot of painting done for assignments I didn't know I had until the very last minute. Oh well. So this week we had the choice of two articles: a heavy metal lovin' conservative and a man who rants about online dating. I was originally going to do two because my prof is taking these images to the National Post and they could potentially be published. Therefore I knew that I needed to bring my A game to this assignment. Unfortunately I didn't get around to doing a second image because a) I ran out of time and b) I thought that if I was going to submit two, they were going to be two GOOD images, not one good and one bad lol.

Here's what the online dating one would have looked like (sorta)
Here's what I ended up going with:

Magazine Class

I am really into my new illustration elective: magazine illustration today. Each week we're given an article from a magazine/newspaper and we have to illusrate it. My favorite part of the class is that we each have different articles so critiques don't get boring. Above is a piece I did for an article about a True Gay Exoricsm. It's about how men volunteer to have the gay 'exorcised' out of them because it is their belief that their gay thoughts are the result from demonic possession.

Next is a portrait assignment we were randomly given. I got Anne Hathaway as Catwoman. Catwoman will be played by her in the new upcoming Batman installment.

The Big O

Second semester has just begun and I am already up to my neck in homework. The nice thing about this semester is that I won't be working so I can focus my attention to my school work. I mean, it's my last semester ever so I want to make it really count.

First completed project of the semester was for interpretive and it is the first piece of my new thesis. I intend on focusing it on doing portraits. I don't want to limit myself to just pop culture, I want to do politicians, religious figures, interest pieces, etc. Our first assignment was to interpret the Greek story of Sisyphus and relate it to our thesis. For those of you who don't know, Sisyphus was a Greek king who was punished by Zeus and Thanatos for his trickery; Sisyphus was to roll a boulder up a hill and when the boulder reached near the top, it would always come rolling back down. This task lasted for eternity. So basically, it's an endless challenge or struggle.

My interpretation to my thesis was relating it to Oprah because her endless challenge or struggle is her weight. One of her most famous/controversial episodes was when she came out on the set with a wagon filled with a bag of 60+ pounds of fat. Oprah was at her smallest she had ever been at that moment in her life. She used the bag of fat to show her audience and viewers what 60 pounds actually looks like and how she had been carrying that around. Since then, she has gained most of the weight back and says she looks back on those days when she was so thin with regret.

Fourth Year - First Semester

I don't know why it has taken me so long to post my work up from last semester. Overall I'm very satisfied with the result and happy with what I produced. Unfortunately I am not going to upload my final piece because it was probably the worst thing I've ever created lol. I was so sick and I forced myself to do it. I think it's currently being used as a desk wedge...so I have high regards for it.

Anywho let me just get you up to speed! My thesis was based on idioms about appearances so things like: Still Waters Run Deep, Never Judge a Book by Its Cover, Looks Are Only Skin Deep, etc. Below are the ones that I ended up illustrating. If you have any questions let me know!

A Smile in a Sea of Sadness - Acrylic on Board
